The Department of Musicology was created in 2011. In 2017, it was reorganized into the Department of Musicology and Choral Arts. The creation of the department became a symbolic act of revival of the Institute of Musicology, which functioned at the Faculty of Philosophy of Lviv University in 1912-1939.
In 2011–2020, the head of the department was Professor Yuriy Medvedyk, and in January 2021, Associate Professor Taras Dubrovnyi became Acting Head of the Department. Teaching staff of the department: 1 professor (doctor of art history), 9 associate professors (of which 6 candidates of sciences), 2 senior teachers, 5 assistants (of which 2 doctors of philosophy). There are 13 postgraduate students in the postgraduate course of the department.
In 2016, the department began training postgraduate students, and in 2017 masters in the specialty 025 Musical Arts (Musicology). In 2022, for the first time the program Bachelor 025 Music Arts (choral conducting) was announced.
Teachers and postgraduate students of the department work on research in the framework of research papers, research projects and grants provided by various institutions and foundations of Ukraine, the European Union and the United States (Fulbright Scholarship, KAAD, DAAD, DFG, etc.). The main areas of research are musical medieval studies, musical oriental studies, choral studies, organology, ethnomusicology, problems of modern musicology.
